Gregory Allan “Kazz” Kastli, 72 years old, of Independence, Iowa, and formerly of rural Waterloo, Iowa, died Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence following a sudden heart attack.
Greg was born March 31, 1953, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Donald Edward Kastli and Nancy Ann (Pulkrabek) Nottger. He attended school in Waterloo, Iowa, and graduated from West High School with the class of 1971. On August 3, 1985, he was united in marriage to Camille Helen Faust at the American Lutheran Church in Jesup. They made their home in rural Waterloo for many years before moving to Independence. Greg worked as a pipefitter at John Deere in Waterloo for 30 years. After retiring from John Deere, he graduated from auctioneering school in Mason City, Iowa, and became an Auctioneer and Realtor. He worked as an auctioneer with Wayne Miller Auctioneering in Independence and then he partnered with Backes Auctioneers and Real Estate in Raymond, Iowa. He was a member of UAW Local 838 in Waterloo and the First United Methodist Church in Jesup.
Greg was lovingly known as Kazz. When he wasn’t working, he was racing. For 52 years, he poured his time and energy into dirt track racing. He took great pride in the fact he raced with multiple generations of competitors. Kazz was #73 and his race car was a staple at the Independence Motor Speedway, where he was inducted into the hall of fame in 2025. Kazz was known for making sure other racers had all the car parts they needed. Whether it was before a race or after, he would often help other racers get their cars ready. He truly had a heart of gold and when retirement from racing was brought up, his famous quote was, “One more year.”
While racing was his pastime, his true love was his family, especially his wife, Cam. Their strong love and devotion to each other set a great example. Kazz will forever be remembered.
Greg is survived by his wife of 40 years, Camille Kastli of Independence, Iowa; 2 sons, Jason (special friend Jill) Kastli of Fairbank, Iowa, Billy (Jen) Keith of Broomfield, Colorado; 2 daughters, Sarah (Scott) Sutton of Center Point, Iowa, Missy (Brent) Griffin of Hudson, Iowa; and 16 grandchildren.
