Dennis R. Cain, 72, of New Hampton and formerly of Sumner, died Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Unity Point/Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
Dennis Ray, son of Lawrence “Larry” and Phyllis (Arnamen) Cain was born September 3, 1952, in Waterloo, Iowa. He received his education in the Waterloo School System and graduated from Waterloo West in 1971. Following high school he moved to Colorado and began his working career in construction and for the rodeo. He married Jodi Kenzelman and to this union two children were born, Jacie and Brandon. The couple would later divorce. Dennis returned to the Waterloo area, earning a degree in Criminal Justice from Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo. On March 9, 1985, he was united in marriage with Tammy Kastli in Waterloo. To this union two sons were born, Travis and Ryan, joining Brandon, Jaci, and Bret. Dennis began his career as a police officer for the Evansdale Police Department, later became the Chief of Police in Readlyn, helped start a Police Department in Lamoni, was an Officer, Sergeant, and Chief of Police for Sumner, and also worked in the Drug Task Force for Black Hawk, Bremer and Fayette County. He was a member of Open Bible Church in Waterloo. Dennis enjoyed hunting and personal gunsmith.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Tammy of New Hampton; children, Jacie (Kale) Scheffler of Harlan, Brandon Cain of Kansas City, Missouri, Bret (Rhonda) Kastli of Evansdale and Ryan Cain of New Hampton; eleven grandchildren, Carter, Carlye, Logan, Margeaux, Kynzlee, Sunny, Rebecca, Rachel, Cole, Courtney, and Kaleb; two great-grandchildren, Carsen and Delilah; step-mother, Shirley Garrison Cain of Cedar Falls; mother-in-law, Leona Kastli of Waterloo; brother-in-law, Robert (Diane) Kastli of Evandale; sister-in-law, Debra (Barry) Bodecker of Evansdale; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Phyllis and William “Bill” Fernau; father, Larry Cain; son, Travis Cain; brother, Larry Cain; father-in-law, Ronald Kastli; and brother-in-law, Kurt Kastli.
Memorials may be made to the family for later designation.
